Taking on Eco-Anxiety: Congregation-Wide Approaches

Tuesday, April 8, 2025 – 7:00 – 8:30 am

Bethlehem Lutheran Church-Twin Cities, Minneapolis Campus

The American Psychological Association and ecoAmerica have defined eco-anxiety (aka climate anxiety) as “a chronic fear of environmental doom.” This fear can stem from direct experience of extreme weather events and environmental change (e.g., floods, forest fires, hurricanes, drought) or exposure to climate change information through news media and other sources. This timely program will explore how multiple generations and faith community leaders can together take on and mitigate the effects of the eco-anxiety many of their members feel through information, education, resources and action.

Presenter: Rev. Emily Meyer, Ministry Lab Executive Director, MN Conference United Church of Christ, Minnesota Church Center, Minneapolis

Creating Caring Faith Communities – Five Things You Can Do

NAMI Minnesota recognizes that a person’s faith and spirituality are part of the overall treatment and recovery process for mental illness. Discrimination, secrecy and shame are among the great obstacles that cause people to wait to receive help for their mental health and for the health of their loved ones. Faith communities play an important role in reducing these obstacles. Learn about mental illnesses, the impact of negative attitudes and five things each of us can do to make Minnesota a better place for people who experience a mental illness. This one-hour class is for faith communities interested in learning about mental illnesses and helping to change attitudes towards mental illnesses.

Inspired Life Speaker Series- Alison Young: At the Speed of Andante

Next in the Inspired Life Speaker Series….

Andante (on-DON-tay) is a musical term that means “at a moderate walking speed." Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Bach are just a few of the classical composers who walked at the speed of andante to capture their muse and compose some of the most enduring music ever written. What they discovered intuitively was that walking is not separate from creativity – it’s largely responsible for creativity. This came as welcome news to Alison Young who lives a dual life as a professional musician and long distance backpacker. She shares her enthusiasm for the intersection of classical music and walking as well as ways to tap into your own creativity for a more balanced life.

A former professional flutist and American Public Media radio host, Alison Young is the “solo, female, middle-aged, titanium-reinforced, neurological-movement-disorder manager, cancer-thriver and long-distance backpacker” Blissful Hiker. She’s hiked over 12,000 miles on six continents and in one year, walked New Zealand’s “long pathway” Te Araroa and the Pacific Crest Trail. She shares stories about her life as a musician and thru-hiker through image, found sound, poetic and metaphor-rich word, bringing alive lessons that inspire, energize and ultimately heal the body, mind and spirit.
