Ambassador Meeting
Tuesday, September 10th – 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Safety Planning and Suicide Prevention:
A Guide for Friends and Family
The first line of defense in trying to prevent someone’s suicide is caring and alert friends and family members. The better armed they are with knowledge, skills, information and resources the greater the likelihood this tragic loss can be avoided. This program is designed to explore basic interventions at the family/friend level to help someone stay safe, receive care and how to continue to be a support once someone is receiving care.
Learning objectives:
Hear a brief update on the current suicide and self-harm statistics in Minnesota so you know the extent of the problem.
Know how to identify signs that someone you know might be at risk of self-harm/suicide.
Receive concrete skills to use as a friend/family member to help support someone experiencing suicidal/self-harm thoughts or urges.
Become familiar with examples of safety plans in the event you need to help develop one.
Witness a role play demonstration for how to talk to someone who is experiencing self-harm/suicidal ideation.
Take home resources and education for how to assist someone in getting help (in addition to those of Mental Health Connect).
Presenter: Melissa Conway, LICSW, Senior Director of Clinical Education and Case Management, Minnesota Mental Health Clinics, Woodbury, MN.
